Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my order take to be made and delivered?

Once your order has been received you will receive a proof approval e-mail within 3 working days.

Once we receive your authorisation to proceed we will do our best to get your order dispatched to you as quickly as possible. Please note there is a minimum manufacturing time of 5 days due to the drying time required between the coats of oil.

Because all signs and items are custom made to order please expect to wait up to 10 -14 working days from proof approval for your order to be shipped/posted.

I can’t see the size of sign that I want. Can you do other sizes?

If you can’t see exactly what you need in our shop, then please contact me directly with your request and we will do our best to match your needs.

My sign is going to live outside. Will I need to protect it?

Oak doesn’t just look the part — the hardwoods strength, density and natural resistance to the exterior elements mean it’s a standout exterior performer, too.

UV Radiation – One of the biggest challenges for any outdoor wooden sign is constant exposure to sunlight. Over time, UV rays can fade wood, causing the colours to dull and the natural grain to lose its beauty. In extreme cases, UV exposure can also weaken the wood fibres, making the sign more susceptible to cracking. Using a UV-resistant finish on your sign can help, but regular maintenance will also play a role in keeping it vibrant.

Moisture – Moisture is a wood sign’s worst enemy. Whether from rain, dew, or humidity, water can seep into the wood, leading to swelling, warping, and rot. Signs in particularly wet climates or shaded areas with poor air circulation are especially vulnerable.

In order to give your sign the best start in life it’s already been treated to 2 coats of Osmo UV Protection oil. This is not only an environmentally friendly finish but it is highly water and dirt resistant too. It’s safe for humans, plants and animals when dry and its microporous, penetrating finish does not crack peel or flake. It delays the natural greying by 12 times in comparison to untreated wood.

Recoating: Simply re-apply one thin coat onto the clean and dry surface when signs of wear become visible.

Are there holes in my sign to hang it up?

When it comes to installation of your sign there are so many variations based on size, weight and the intended location. Therefore, I thought the best solution was not to drill holes in your sign or restrict you to one specific fixing method.

I have created a guide that might give you ideas on how best to hang your sign.

How long will my order take?

The Process – From a freshly sawn block of oak to a smooth beautiful bespoke stable sign. It’s all done here in my Perthshire workshop. I build up a stock of blank products that just need your personalisation and bespoke requests before they are finished. This allows me to provide a shipping time of around 10 to 14 days for something so bespoke and handmade. If you are including your own image this may take a bit of extra time to process on the computer before being ready for the laser engraver.

Where does my wood come from?

I source the oak from my local sawmill in Fife. I mainly use green oak (freshly cut) but occasionally seasoned oak, depending on the product. I choose your Oak carefully but as it’s a natural product there are often really special knots and grain, adding to the character and feel. I like to keep things local to reduce our carbon footprint and support other local businesses.
